Description
The Virginia-class attack submarine is 377 feet long, has an underwater displacement of 7,800 tons, a diving depth of more than 800 feet, an underwater speed of 25 knots, can stay underwater for three months at a time, does not need to replenish nuclear fuel during its entire life cycle, and has 132 officers and soldiers on board. The Virginia-class submarine has a total of 12 missile vertical launch systems that can fire a salvo of Tomahawk submarine-launched cruise missiles. The torpedo tubes on the submarine can launch Mk48ADCAP heavy torpedoes and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. The special operations compartment in the Virginia-class submarine can also accommodate a mini-submarine for special forces.
As the next generation of attack nuclear submarines that will gradually replace the US military's current Los Angeles-class submarines, the Virginia-class will be another weapon for the US military to continue to dominate the ocean in the 21st century. The US Department of Defense made a decision in 1993 to stop the production of the Seawolf-class submarine after the completion of the three Seawolf-class submarines because the military believed that it should produce more economical and more adaptable submarines in the post-Cold War combat environment. This concept has led to the Virginia-class submarine becoming the main force of the US military's underwater force. This class of submarines mainly emphasizes multi-purpose and flexibility. On the basis of maintaining traditional deep-sea combat capabilities, it further emphasizes near-shore shallow water and special operations capabilities. Its main tasks include: launching anti-land missiles through vertical launch systems and torpedo tubes to carry out secret strikes on the enemy. Attack enemy submarines through advanced combat systems and torpedoes with flexible warheads. Attack enemy surface ships. Support one's own ship battle group through advanced electronic sensors and communication equipment. Use sensors to collect important intelligence, determine the location of enemy radar facilities, missile launch positions and command centers, and monitor communication signals and track ship movements. Secretly lay mines against enemy ships. Carry special forces and equipment: perform search and rescue, reconnaissance, sabotage, launch feints, and guide targets for US artillery and air strikes.
